In July of 2017, 25 people were killed on Colorado roadways in crashes involving impaired drivers. This is the highest amount of such fatalities in one month since 2014. The Colorado Department of Transportation, Colorado State Patrol, and other local law agencies are ramping up their annual “The Heat Is On Campaign” one week early this year to help ensure the roads are safe from impaired drivers. Heightened DUI enforcement began on August 18, 2017, and runs through September 5, 2017, for a three-week crackdown. Over 118 law enforcement agencies from across the state will be participating in this event, which makes it the largest crackdown of the year.

In 2016, law enforcement cited 974 impaired drivers during the Labor Day Holiday, which was an average of 54 arrests per day. This number was the third-highest arrest total out of CDOT's fourteen different enforcement periods in 2016.
