What is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage?

What is uninsured motorist coverage?

Uninsured motorist coverage protects you if you are involved in an accident with an at-fault driver who does not carry liability insurance.

What is underinsured motorist coverage?

Underinsured motorist coverage, on the other hand, applies when you're in an accident with an at-fault driver whose liability limits are too low to cover the damage or medical expenses.

What is the purpose of uninsured motorist coverage?

The purpose of uninsured motorist coverage is to pay for your medical bills and property damage expenses in the event the at-fault party does not carry any automobile liability insurance.  If you're hurt or your car is damaged in a crash caused by such a driver, this coverage will help pay for costs, up to the limits in your policy.

What happens if I am hit by an uninsured driver?

You would utilize your uninsured motorist coverage if you are hit by an uninsured driver who is deemed to be at fault of the causing the collision.

How do I know if I have UM/UIM coverage?

If you have a copy of your policy, look for the declarations page, and the amount of coverage is typically towards the end.  It will show you how much coverage per person and per occurrence.

Why should I increase my UM/UIM?

The average number of automobile collisions every year in the United States is six million, with three million people becoming injured every year in these collisions.  With the affordability of uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage and the number of drivers on the road without insurance, its not logical to have a policy where this type of coverage is not included. Make sure you have this type of coverage and that you have at least $100,000 in UIM/UM coverage.  It may only increase your premium by a few extra dollars a month and it’s worth the security of knowing you are protected.  Pay now or pay later.
